I'm currently reading this. What are people's opinions about it?
Personally, I like it but I feel its oddly revealing (and at times obviously unpolished). I'm about half-way through the book and it seems like its a meditation on death (with his friend's suicide and his visit to the Japanese cemetery). Its hard to read it as a piece of "fiction".

Re: An Unfortunate Woman
Sat, May 14, 2005 - 1:24 PMI started it about a year ago. I read a couple of chapters and to be honest, I had to walk away from it. It is sitting on my bookshelf waiting for the right rainy weekend.
All of his other novels have totally turned me on. I eat them up. But this one, I don't know, maybe there was a reason he did not have it published before he died.... -

Sat, May 21, 2005 - 9:04 AMInteresting on putting the book down; I have read most of his work and am saving the last bits for when I need them. This way I know that they are waiting for me like a new land waiting for the beaching of my vessel.
