TODAY'S RICHARD'S BIRTHDAY!....

topic posted Mon, January 30, 2006 - 2:00 PM by  offlineHolden S.
....what are YOU gonna do about it? i just posted a link to one of his stories (What Are You Going To Do With 390 Photographs of Christmas Trees?) on of my tribes...Finders and Scavengers, to which you're all invited.
i'd be hard pressed to pick one favorite Brautigan book but The Tokyo-Montana Express is a contender, as is The Abortion...when i first read it, the description of this unusual library where anyone can come in off the street & donate unique handmade books made me wish that such a place really existed...so that when i found out years later that some people have gotten inspired to start such libraries (which are now called "brautigan libraries")...it made me very happy!

2 more questions: who's the moderator here? (just curious.) and...who here besides me has read Ianthe's (Richard's daughter) memoir You Can't Catch Death? i like it very much.

The Abortion... has to be my favorite. It was first given to me by a friend of my mom when I was around 11 or 12. The library pictured on the Picador cover features the Presidio branch, which was the library I first got any use of as a kid and is faithfully described in the book (except for the method of book accumulation and cave storage).

I also love The Revenge Of the Lawn.

I didn't realize he had a daughter, much less one who wrote a memoir. Thanks for the tip.

Y'know, someone gave me a copy of The Abortion too. I wonder if people give Richard's books out more frequently than other authors. I, in turn, gave someone a copy of The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster.

I have loaned out so many copies of Brautigan books never to see them again, that I now keep several copies of each one and I no longer "loan" them out, I give them away. I keep all of the rare/hard to fid copies for myself.
My favorite depends on so many factors, but overall, I think my favorites are, Watermellon Sugar, Willard and His Bowling Trophies, and Confederate General From Big Sur......

i have loaned out more brautigan books - than i can count. never get them back.

i did start a habit of signing all my books to myself from the author...i generally get these back.

The Abortion is my favourite but I prefer his poetry to his fiction, The Pill Vs. The Springhill Mine Disaster is my favourite book of his.

I always snatch up copies of his books whenever I find them, I have lots of duplicates but until I stumbled across this Tribe I've only ever met one or two other people who even know who Brautigan is.

I didn't know his daughter had published either, I'll have to look for that.

The Pill vs. The Springhill Mine Disaster is my first favorite as a kid...when I lived in the Springhill Garden apartments over the Springhill Mine. Wierd is the word....never found a connection.
I do have a copy of "In Watermellon Sugar" printed in Danish, "Speiljens Statue". That is my favorite book that does not really translate.
